Seems like a fotal cheat to put guilt free spending in its own category... And have a $0 on clothes? Dont believe it for a second. These guys really need a budget so they can actually enjoy their high income and have choices.

It didn't make sense to me why she was so anxious until we started hearing about their guilt free spending habits. I too would be anxious if I was in that position. She should be anxious.

This is a classic case of women deep down not wanting or enjoying being the breadwinner. It's inate within us. We want a man who can 'protect and provide', and there is nothing wrong with that. What is a bit odd is this womens level of panic just two months in to him leaving a very stressful job especially when she herself has such a high income. My husband left his job because of the stress and i was jumping for joy he could finally sleep and take a break because he desperately needed it. They are planning a wedding and I can sense she is panicked she is about to marry an unemployed person which doesn't align with the life she pictured for herself.

Sometimes this analysis forces a diagnosis. 29 min in and the father’s spending is the culprit but she admits she wasn’t like this until her husband brought up responsible finances. It’s a heads I win, tails you lose way of looking at it

Honestly Maddie feels like a series of red flags. She could just work with Paul to cut back on spending for a bit and give him a chance to find a job that doesn’t deteriorate his mental health. They don’t have kids, their fixed costs are reasonable, just dial it back- it should be that easy. Instead she continues to spend and pressured Paul because resources are scarce. I’d run if I were him.

I don't understand the negativity in the comments. This couple has amazing potential. When I was that age, I didn't have it all figured out and didn't have anything close to a robust financial system. They are making themselves vulnerable, trying to make their rich life. I hope they stick together through this roadblock. They have the opportunity to live an amazing life they dream of.

I spent 150 dollars for our wedding because we were really struggling at the time. We didn’t rent anything, just did it at home and I made all the food and baked cupcakes instead of a cake! We had a great time with all of our loved ones ❤ I think the most important thing is to make the memories not how much you spend at the party

I see some viewers complaining about hosting wealthy couples, claiming they do not relate to them. I like hearing about rich people money problems ! Most of us, if we are not wealthy, do not have wealthy friends or family. If we do, money topic is avoided as fire, it is a huge taboo. Wealthy people avoid talking deeply about money at all cost, and their unwealthy friends / acquaintances are afraid to bring the subject for many reason but one of them not wanting the wealth gap become an obstacle and alienator and the identity of the relationship. If not for those incredibly brave and unusual couples we wouldn't have a chance to witness them being super honest and vulnerable. about their finances and feelings about them. It is always good to learn from people who are ahead of you, to see their perspective and fears so you can start imagining if you would resemble them if you were to find yourself in their shoes and learn ahead of time what their mistakes So bring them all on !

I do understand why she feels insecure with him. He will eventually have to make equal amount as her or more, or she will not be able to take time off work to have kids. Though in UK, I think you do get 1 year paid parental leave. And what happens if she gets laid off, like she mentioned…

goodness this whole ep feels like "rich people problems" - it's fascinating that they are struggling with the exact same feelings as folks who are poor, however, their stress doesn't feel 'earned' to me because two months of her gross salary is what I earn in an entire year! I look at them, their age and salary, their earning potential, and the fact that at least she has a huge safety net in her parents, and I just can't feel bad for them spending $7k/mo on fun things ON TOP OF their fixed cost spending. part of me just thinks, cry me a river? they will be fine, this is just a blip. but i thank them for sharing their story! they seem like a lovely couple who, with some therapy around their mindset and emotions around money, will do extremely well for themselves and be quite happy and able to enjoy the finer things in life. mazel tov on your engagement, Paul and Maddie! I hope he finds a good job soon and they have a wonderful wedding ❤

The issues facing this couple are far larger than financial. Megan clearly has a crippling self-esteem problem that has kept her stagnant. Peter likes to play the blame game on her rather than spending time on his own self- reflection and self-awareness.

I totally empathize with Maddie. My income has been high enough that I haven’t needed to budget or worry about money. But now that I have kids, I have that same anxiety about losing my job or overspending as Maddie. I know it’s because I haven’t run the numbers and set a budget for myself. But it’s hard gathering up the numbers and facing reality when you’re an overspender. 😅

From what I’ve seen, women generally do not like the feeling of being the sole provider for a family. Traditionally, this is the man’s roll. I wonder if this will make things harder for successful women going forward.

As a single parent (no child support , no alimony), making $40,000 AUD = $26,600 US dollars, l can't relate to the young woman's salary, let alone a combined household income. I don't have any investments outside my superannuation/ retirement fund, l own my modest home (no mortgage), own outright my Mazda CX-3 car, $1,000 emergency fund. Geez weez, l wouldn't have any financial problems at $200K annual income.

They shouldn’t have combined finances before marriage. He would have had to plan ahead and save up on his own before leaving the job and it is putting extra stress on her having to provide for him when they aren’t even legally married yet.

Dave Ramsey talk about this a lot. Love or hate traditional values, but waiting to purchase a home or combine finannces until after married makes a whole heck of lot of sense. Would Maddie go through with this wedding and see a life with Paul if he didn't want to to do the power couple/corporate lawyer anymore? I felt like I could see resentment bubbling up in her....

As someone else already stated, I can’t relate to this couple at all. $20k/month income & they still have issues? That’s just because they don’t want to slow down their spending. For the follow up, he didn’t even mention a job so my assumption is he’s still unemployed? Maybe that’s why you didn’t get a follow up from her. 🤔 Can we get more interviews from couples who make like $100k combined annually?

Great episode and one comment for Ramit- you mentioned if they sell 150k from their investments, that should cover them, but from personal experience, let’s not factor out capital gain. So to get 150k, investments worth approx 200k might need to be sold. Obviously it probably doesn’t matter but wanted to put it in there.
